Yeah, good luck with that. I get the feeling that this guy somehow believes that all Japanese is is a different way of writing English.

Hey dude - you'd have to learn both an entirely different language AND an entirely different script set You can't just read the text and have it magically be in English.

U can Find Englisn written in a Japanese way (Katakana) but u find that only in the Game's Menu,That's why u don't have to know japanese to Play a Fighting Game. for the rest U have to Know the language but when U Know the Kana the most difficult comes The Kanji (Chinese Character),Here is the difficulty. for example to read a newspaper correctly u have to know about 1500 Kanji :Argh:

there's no point in learning Japanese just for a game or whatever :P
    simply not worth the effort.

anybody who is multilingual would know what i mean (in terms of effort) because to be fluent you can't just "learn" but you have to "live" the language.

if you want to learn jap you have to go live in jap
but for people like me, i couldn't care less.

Maybe google language translator could help you?

It now has English>Japanese(and vice versa) and English>Chinese(Simplifie d)(and vice versa).
Although im not sure on its reliability, especially since its BETA.

    http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en

--An example using the text i wrote above, eng>jap--

    多分google の言語訳者はあなたを助けられるか.それ に 今English>Japanese(a nd の副versa が) そして English>Chinese(Simplifie d)(and の副versa ある) 。ベータ以 来の信頼性で, 特に確実なim が。 http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en

Im assuming it cant handle brackets or any other type of special character very well...

So how do you suggest he types the Japanese text?
I was merely suggesting that it could be of some help to him. I did think of this problem before i posted. I proceeded in posting because usually a person has a rough idea of what is going on in a game scene. Meaning he could type in some words/sentences of what he thinks is happening and compare to the actual japanese in-game text.

If he carried on doing this he would soon become familiarised to its meaning.

It would be alot of work though, but like i said; it was only a suggestion.

Usually I don't trust the web based (or soft based) translations.
Just get a Japanese paragraph, and make it English, then use that English to translate back Japanese, in most cases, the original and the created won't match. (Or try the other way around)

To learn a different language, just use it. Getting used to is, would be the first step to all different languages. Don't care about the how the sentence is being created (as in subject, objective, verbs, that'll come along later on). The easiest way is memories a J-E /E-J dictionary and get the words.

A six year old kid (cousin) is playing a game, don't know if he understands it 100%, like an adult would, but he's enjoying it (as far as I see), wouldn't be that hard (although he does ask us how and the meaning with the Kanji characters). Unless you want to read a "law book", mostlikely in this case, you'll need high-school levels, but, games are mostly designed for all ages (except the GTA ones), I don't think it'll require a "law book" level capability. So, probably if you look at just for games, junior high or middle school level of Japanese would be enough.

Hope that made the hurdle lower.

I've already notice the huge mistake between French and English, Ican't even thinking about what does it do with Japanese and English. Thus u have to Know Kanji to understand...good luck (u can also ask to a Fansub's Japanese-english Translator some help if he wants to - fansub => Free japanese animation subtitles)

I see that you talk about french>english, and that your location is paris. If your first language isnt french then completely ignore the first part of this post ok. I apologise.

In what you just wrote you've made the same mistakes as a web-based translator would. So i dont really understand how you can say they make huge mistakes when you dont fully understand the transition from french to english in the first place.

Everyone knows that translators aren't 100%, **** not even human translators are 100%. It just takes a little common sense to figure it out.

    That doesnt mean its wrong.
e.g "The black cat" translated to french>"Le chat noir" translated back to english>"The cat black". You notice that "black cat" has turned to "cat black". This is just because the french words have been translated, but not re-arranged to make sense in english. In french thats how its written "the cat black", its still pronounced the black cat though since its down to the type of words that are said first and not how it would read out. A lil common sense, all it takes.

Hmm, this is japanese though, supposedly one of the hardest languages to learn, and yet they say the same about english.

Anyways i suppose in the end you jus gotta dedicate some of your time to actually learning japanese, whether you do this via a japanese>english dictionary, take up japanese language classes or any other way is up to you. Theres no easy way out.

I knew that, a translation is personal (I know my english isn't perfect but when i learned english (british) at school and now I read english on the web this isn't the same thing, I think that's why I make more mistake now, i guess). I said huge mistake 'cuz even if I still making mistakes right now,u can understand me a lil bit. But a translator gives u something wich means nothing almost time(talking about english-french) i think it's a usefull tool when u have translate a word but not for a sentence or a entire text. right now only human can make a good translation not a program.

In my opinion Japanese and english are easier to learn than french I think that's why french isn't fashionable...lol^^

i just got to add computer translators don't understand the context of what is said.

they don't know the difference between:

    1. Bat: The Mammal (noun)
    2. Bat: The tool (noun)
    3. Bat the Ball (Action Verb)

Actually some translators base it on what word comes before it, and what word comes after it. Soooo...im not really sure what your point is.

yes they try this but it is still inaccurate. That is why you find sometimes when you are using online translators it makes no sense at all, you really have to twist and get your head around to what has been said. Word's do really come out of the blue. And if you have used babelfish you should know what i am talking about, especially when it comes to the chinese websites.

"Tools available on the Internet, such as AltaVista's Babel Fish, and low-cost translation programs, have brought machine translation technologies to a large public. These tools produce what is called a "gisting translation" — a rough translation that gives the "gist" of the source text, but is not otherwise usable." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transla...ne_translation

so babelfish is useful as to get a gist of the information but can't really be used to translate, also it outputs twisted translations as you said with your,
"the black cat" example, and with some sentences even when using a little common sense to interpret, it still gives rise to some ambiguity, especially notable with the chinese sites.

So i can understand the comments made by other inviduals feeling translators are untrustworthy, especially when tools like babelfish were not designed specifically for the purposes of translation but rather just general gist translation. However most of the time the translation turns out okay, but on odd occasions where translation fails, it diminishes my trust. I would not use it for any essays.
