I've been looking around and as far as I can tell it's thought that the PSP cant handle the rom size.

There have been projects in the past to convery rom games to cd. Though the guy who was doing it was charging and they were small ones. No metal slug X.

The internal hardware is basicly the same in both systems.
The main diverence was the delivery method.

why could the psp not handle the rom size because the cd roms are about the same size as the cartridge roms

CD games "load" chunks of the game into memory at certain points (i.e. loading screens). Cartridges work by constantly streaming data data, and because the memory stick is not fast enough for this, the entire rom need to be loaded into the PSP'S RAM. The PSP has about 24MB of useable RAM, some of which needs to be used by the emulator itself, so only roms which are about 16MB or less would be useable. Considering pretty much all the games that are 16MB or less have Neo CD versions, there's not much point in creating an AES/MVS emulator.

It could be possible to write a "streaming" engine for roms (I think this might have been done with the Xbox N64 emulator) but this would have to be done from scratch, would be VERY difficult and would have no guarantee of success.

The only way I can see it being done if there is a loader made for each game. That would completely replace the game engine and just use the rom as a storage bank for sprites and sounds etc.

Dont know how possible that would be, or how much work.
Somebody sometime might do it for the main popular games.. metal slug etc.

well there is one sorta... MAME for psp. Mame for psp is split up into diff sections because of size of mame program. so there is an SNK mame that can run some roms but not any worth mentioning.

There is a mame for the pc that can run neo geo roms.
But thats because your average pc has more than 24MB of useable RAM.

Or do you mean there is one for the psp?

if we could use virtual ram then we could load the rom into the memory but we cant so unless someone wants to make an emu that only plays games under 24mb or 16(i think for 2.0?)then he can go waste his time.........

There is.

There was this guy a while back who did a few. I think that there was a whole lot of work involved though. And the ones that he did were small ones. I'll see if I can dig anything up laters.

There's SNK roms that are playable but none of them are Neo Geo roms.
