Who's your fav. character? So far, mine is Iria. Although, I haven't seen all of them yet, so who knows whether I'll have a new fav. character.
Oh yea, while playing SO, I finally took notice that the Time gate was the same one from the SO 3. I knew the damn thing looked familiar when I first saw Ratix and the gang approach it....not to mention the planet it was stationed at, "Stix". Knowing this relationship only made my love for the series stronger.PSN ID: FinalB

Do the voices still sound screwed up in the beginning? I havent had a chance to upgrade to the latest version yet. Also, what is it they say as soon as they leave the house in the very beginning?

To tell you the truth, i dont really have a fav. character. Im not very far into the game and i havent gotten any new characters. As for the intro voice acting, i dont know how much better (or worse) it is but i will check later in the day and post what is said as well.

Actually, the voices are pretty bad (muffled, scratchy sound), even when emulating full speed on a pc.. At least they were for me ;)

Emu problems...
'Lo all - questions.
I have SNES9x 0.03a (the last official build), and while most games run fine (aside from Tales of Phantasia, and apparently that doesn't run too well for anyone), Star Ocean doesn't even LOAD for me. I have the .SMC file of the De-Jap translation, and it works terrific on my PC emu, but the PSP won't even load past a black screen. Is there any way to make it work on the official build, or am I going to have to go get one of the unofficial-er versions?

Actually Tales of Phantasia runs almost flawless on the new SNES9x 002Y25

Nm, fixed it. Just got uoSNES9x (the newest build) and not only Star Ocean but (sure enough) Tales of Phantasia work fine. And I'm four hours into Star Ocean. And I couldn't be happier - played SO2 at least five times, and everytime I run across a feature I miss, it shows up soon enough. "Oh, damn - looks like there aren't any Killer Mov - oh, there they are. Heh." Still looking for whatever connections I can between the games, besides Ronixis (obvious). For example, Leon was Fellpool - hoping that wasn't just thrown in SO2 to say, "Hey, any of you play the first one?". Plus still looking for Puffy.
Also the damn Velcant Boss is ludicrously hard. Either that or I ludicrously suck.

Star Ocean 2 was one of the best RPGs, in my book anyways.
I've tried downloading a translated Star Ocean rom but all of the text is in English
....any fixes for this?

Why would you want to fix it if it's all in English? ;)
Zitat von MSX
I've had a hard time getting into the game so far because it doesn't seem like it's fully translated - mainly the menus and such. It's kind of a bit of a pain. Has anyone been able to find a better translation of the game, that's more like Dragon Quest 5 and 6, or Final Fantasy V, or any of those? Or am I just being too picky?

My best guess is he wants in in some other language, maybe Spanish or portugese. The spanish translation scene is quite large.

You can get a full translation into English from De-Jap - make sure to get the latest version you can, the newest one even has a tiny bit of voice-dubbing. As for Spanish, I have no earthly idea - but look long enough and you can find the original Japanese ROM. Someone may have patched that, then.

Nah, the "fix" I was referring to was playing patched roms, as I thought that was the problem, but someone on IRC sent me a version he was using, and it works great, except for a few things, like the pop-up menus that say "yes" and "no", for questions and such.
Gryphon: I've been playing it for most of the day, this game is great, it has so much depth to it, being able to cook, compound things...it's great!
.
I'll look for that DeJap version...now that I think about it, the original rom I downloaded had DeJap in the file name

I managed to find it.
Looks like the rom I had downloaded was Dejap's English beta, so not everything was translated. I managed to find myself a patch and the Jpn rom and "Get er dun".
It is taking me a bit to get into the game though. I can see how the battle system was the mother of the other games, but it's taking some getting used to. Definitely not as easy as 2 and 3 imo. Or maybe I'm just missing the obvious.

Has anyone, while @ the arena, ever left the town and had your characters come with you only to get into a battle and find out that only Ratix is with you? I'm wondering if this is a SNES9X glitch or if I'm forgetting to do something at the arena.
-
07-12-2005, 07:29 PM #20
Yea I had that while playing on pc, and boy was I happy having my last real save file (state saved after I won through the arena) 2 hours ago. From what I've read the game is at fault, not the emulator (oh and it may crash randomly, not emulators fault eather).

Yeah, the battle system is a little more difficult - mostly because it's damned near impossible to just move somewhere on the screen. I can't seem to just think "I should back off" and have that work - at least not without some herculean attempt to target a blank space a short distance away to move. Now if you master enough Combat Skills the fights get easier again (as you die less), but as is they're really missing much of the SO2 and SO3 freedom.
(BTW, if I'm wrong and there IS a simple way to just plain MOVE, someone please correct me - it'd make my game easier).

Well, I can offer what I like about SO games:
For one, there's incentive to play through more than once. There's usually a bonus dungeon (no word yet on this one), and there's always multiple endings, and more characters than you can get in your party the first time through (e.g. if you stick with Cius you can't get Ashlay, etc.).
For another the graphics are gorgeous sprites.
The battle system, while not perfect, is involving and fast-paced (no waiting for your turn here - just run across the battlefield and stab something).
The story doesn't really fall into as many RPG conventions as many old RPGs - rather than be some sort of "There is a generic evil force and only the crystals will stop them OMG", it's a bit more complex ordeal, involving time travel, sci-fi, and undeveloped planets (think Prime Directive). This is likely because from what I've heard the SO games are based on Japanese novels. At least the first two, not sure about 3.
There are actual skills to learn as you go - not just new spells and whatnot, but actual skills for use outside of battle. Cook your own food, forge your own weapons, compound your own medecines - the list goes on. Star Ocean's one of the only series I've found that uses this (although I've heard maybe one of the Tales games does something similar, not sure on that one).
So, all in all, I'd recommend this as a highly original and addictive SNES RPG that sadly never made it over here.
Oh, BTW, for everyone else: One of the areas that glitches the game is the Cius PA at Tataroy. You split up, he leaps into the arena and dispatches a Velcant, and then you leave - but everyone else is gone. Avoid the PA if you can.

Trying to keep life in the original thread....
Question: Does anyone know an easier way to unlock Talents? I have, literally, NO character with originality except Ratix who unlocked at random whilst doing... something. And I need to have Ronixis and Perisie unlock it for some Customizing. I've heard one of the Violin songs does it (not sure which). Anyone have a better idea of how to make my characters Original?

Hey guys, sorry for the long downtime from this thread. To cook food, you need to go to items, hit triangle, and down to item creation, and select cooking. There are other things to pick like identify, authoring, crafting, etc. Just select cooking and pick your character and your ingredients. Just remember certain characters cook better things. To check talents go to status, and hit triangle and your talents will show up in a new box. Also dont forget to go to special and set your techniques. Also certain skills go under here such as scout and familiar which you can set.
