Thats what i did with all of my roms. They had a .gen extension. I just renanmed them to .bin then zipped them, And they worked just fine.

This is why there are so many bad/incorrectly named ROMs on the net. You can't just change format by changing the file extension at the end.C2D E6600 @ 3.4 + GTX280 @ 720/1485/2600

Right.
Anyone can go rename a file from "pr0n.avi" to "pr0n.mp4" But that doesnt make it a mp4. Its still an avi with an incorrect extension, And probably wont even play in DivX Winamp WMP etc etc etc...
If the file is truly a .bin then renaming it from a .gen to a .bin will fix the problem.

Except that in this case, .SMD, .BIN and .GEN are identical formats. They just have different extensions.

SMD = Sega Megadrive. Exact same thing as a Genesis, just the non-American name. GEN = Genesis. BIN = generic dumped ROM image extension.

I'm pretty sure that .dat is a generic file type, meaning just data, it could be video/audio/text/etc...

Well, windows media player might play it, because it will automatically search for what codec to use and use it, but other things will probably recognize it as a corrupted MP3 if it is meant as a video file.

The .DAT file on a video CD is just an MPEG-1 video file, renamed to .DAT.

No. SMD stands for Sega Megadrive, and is just a common Genesis ROM extension. Trust me on this, I have the complete collection.

Same here.

As with the SNES/N64 etc, ROMs can be in different formats depending on the copier device used.
Super Magic Drive is one of these devices
