Default English translation for Seiken Densetsu 2?

I know, I know. You're thinking, "you moron! Secret of Mana IS the english SD2!!"

Okay, maybe you threw in an expletive or two :silenced:

But I seem to recall someone (on this board or possibly another) talking about how the english translation for the official Secret of Mana was butchered. The story is apparently "better" if you can find a translation for the japanese version.

I found a japanese SD2. That was apparently the easy part. However, I've had an impossible time finding this "english translation" for it. I assume I'm looking for a patch similar to the one used to make SD3 legible to english/american eyes.

So, I ask you. Does anybody have any information that might lead to the whereabouts of this english patch for the japanese SD2?

Most likely, there wont be an english re-translation of Seiken Densetsu 2. The story (from what my limited japanese can grasp) wasnt THAT butchered, at least not to the level that final fantasy 4 and 6 were. So i dont think anyone will waste their time with a retranslation.

There may be a real SD2 translation out there that I don't know of, but the closest thing I do know of is Secret of Mana Variable Width Font Edition. The game was given a new font and the text was rewritten, but it sounds like they just rewrote things to take advantage of the fact that it could be done. It doesn't mention anything about using the original Japanese as a guide.

On the one hand, that's not exactly what I wanted to hear. I was somewhat hoping to be treated to a different story when I played through SoM again.

On the other hand, I can quit searching for this bloody translation and just play the english version.

I think the other hand wins. Thanks for the help.

I heard the difficulty was toned down considerably for FFII (U) from FF IV (J), but I was unaware of any butchering of the text in FFII and FFIII (both US, naturally). :eh:

I had seen that a while back. And yes it does expand the script, making it a bit more coherent, but its still just about the same english translation.

As for final fantasy 4/6, those two games were massacred in the translation to english. The version of ff4 the us got was easy type in japan, although the remake on chronicles is based on hard type.

And final fantasy 6 was mainly translation butchering and some graphics censoring.

Also the translation is much better in FF Chronicals. Also it is not based off of "hard-type" but actually IS "hard-type"

It was i who posted that comment,
and i have secret of mana 2 (the best snes game ever) in translated english,
i just didn't realise i had to change the screen size to any of the bl modes.
the rom does sincerly exist already patched,it's easy to find.
please, for the love of square, track it down, you won't regret it.
The only problem is that even with the sound of and at 333hz it does slow down later on when all 3 charaters are fighting against lots of enemies.
i would love to tell you where to get it but this website doesn't allow such thingsorama.

Wait, Secret of Mana 2? That would be Seiken Densetsu 3, right? I have that one with an english translation, but I'm waiting for Y to make a few more tweaks to his SNES emulator before I give that one a shot.

Don't bother, It is perfectly playable right now, Gameplay is pretty close to full and the music is fine if you bump it to 1.1 or 1.2.
