How to get crashed gpsp (ie. GBA) games to play
Hi all
I managed to get Final Fantasy Tactics to work.
As everyone who test FFT knows, the game crashed when Marche gives you the book early in the game.
1 . Download the sav game attached, extract it to your gpsp dir that you will extract the Final Fantasy Tactics rom.
2. Download the european version rom of FFT, ie.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (E) (M5) or
1194 - Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (E) (M5)
3. Extract the zip: 1194 - Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (E) (M5).zip to the location of the save.
4. Press start, Keep pressing start and it will load the save file.
Now you should be able to play the rest of FFT because I bypassed the crash section.
This method should work for other games that have sections that crash, except for Zelda Minish cap (i wished I got it to worked), don't know about pokemon (try it and see) etc..
5. Here is the method.
a) Play the game on VisualBoyAdvance.
b) Play passed the crashed section
c) Save in-game not savestate. Copy the .sav file to the psp/game/gpsp/ folder or where-ever you stored your rom.

theres a problem with that idea... if i do so, the sav file is like 8kb, but the original ones the emulator saves is 64kb... see the dillema?

And the savegame is 8kb all the time... while the one generated by gpsp is 64kb

I would love to provide a Savegame for Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga - But... Its 8KB instead of 64 and simply wont load in the Emulator... :-(

i've messed around with all the save possiblities,
but VBA still saves 8kb saves for Minish Cap...
interestingly, GameFaqs.com
has some 64kb saves for Minish Cap...

y does everyone wanna play zelda: the minish cap so bad?? i have it for gameboy its prob the worst zelda game in my opinion. its wayyy to short. i beat it in like 6 hours...

Problem, pokemon emerald saves games with 128 kbs... and it won't load on visual boy advance... does anybody knows a turn around? because i need some gamesharkage... and the gpsp doesn't have gameshark in it's code..

if you look under emulation>saves>
you can find an options to make VBA read 128kb saves
so, any news on forcing VBA to save 32kb, 64kb, or 128kb?

What version of the VBA are you guys using? I already tried to copy a save from gpsp to the computer and load it with my version 1.7.2 VBA but it wont load, it's the same with the gpsp, it won't load VBA saves.

First... I found out why that happens...
GPSP is buggy with other Savetypes beside the oldest Savetype the GBA used... SRAM Saving...
So it will write invalid EEPROM or FLASH saves for game using that savetype...
There is a Fix thought... You need to patch the Roms to use SRAM Saving... there are several Tools for Windows who automatically patch your Rom...
For those few Games that arent supported by those Tools... there often are IPS Patches to patch them manually...
Once patched, use the patched Rom in both GPSP and VBA... just save as usual... and now it should output a 64Kilobyte big .sav file when you save... instead of 8kb or something...
And now... you can freely exchange Saves from GPSP and VBA, as long as both use the patched Rom...
Why I know that? Well... First - I tested it... Second - I got a XGFlash GBA Flash Device for my GBA... and it didnt support EEPROM / FLASH Saving aswell (I am a oldtimer... i know... lol...) - So I always had to patch my Roms... I just thought I would try it here aswell... and it did work...
My Test-Subject was Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, I was able 2 bypass the first Battle with Bowser that way... but then it simply crashes on the next Battle you enter... as usual - haha...[B]PS2*NFO Hatelist[/B]

I had enough time to learn bout GBA stuff... afterall I got a XGFlash (very old flashcart for gba...) that only supported SRAM saving... so i needed such tools often...
How I came across the buggy EEPROM and FLASH saving?
Mere coincidence you could say... tried to use a GPSP save on VBA and vice versa... just didnt work out... and the rest is history...
The Patches (.IPS) files i provided in my M&L-SSS patch are SRAM-Patches... that delete the EEPROM Saving the Game got, and add SRAM saving instead...
Why I did that? Well... the VBA savegames (EEPROM, flash, ect...) - are correct... but due to GPSPs bad way of handling eeprom, ect... you cant use VBA savegames with it...
So, due to SRAM being the only proper done saving on GPSP, we had 2 do a SRAM Patch to be able 2 bypass the first crashing battle with bowser (that, even after i fixed it... still dealt problems...), aswell as the crashing minigame when crossing over to beanbean kingdom...
With a invalid way of reading savedata, we would have been stuck with that damn broken battle forever :P
The real fix thought is a Endless Loop Kill on entering Battle... ^^
It was trying to use some function that currently is not supported in that emulator yet... so we had to cut that one out, cause it would have tried to use that function forever...
It also was the reason why the game didnt crash on entering battle, but simply stucks... ^^
All together, the SRAM Patch, my Savegames to bypass the unfixable areas (that my fix cant fix... lol...), and the Fix itself... make it possible to play the game...
That is about all...
About Tools to patch in S-RAM Saving... its been ages since i used my XGFlash... My Flashing Utility automatically patched it to use S-RAM, so i never really had 2 deal with it... ^^[B]PS2*NFO Hatelist[/B]

Where do I get these Sram Ips patches, I tried the one you included in your M&L patch on another rom but it didn't work, Thge VBA still spits out 8kb sav files.

they work just fine for me... you sure you got the Scene Release of the Rom?
The 100% unmodified one? And also make sure you applied the right Patch... as the wrong one wont work either... even if it says "Patch Successful..."
About my Fix not working... I can guarantue it works... as I test my Stuff myself all the Time before I release it... Both US and EUR Game worked fine after applying my patches...
You probably forgot to use my Savegames or you didnt add the two needed Patches for your Config File...

I tried appying it to Tales of the World 3 Narikiri Dungeon...It didn';t work, still spits out 8kb. It's a clean rom as well. Does it even work on Japanese roms?

@MarioFamous : Oh lol... Of course you arent allowed to use a Fix specific for one Game to another random Game!
Check Releases.Pocketheaven (Google) and search ur GBA Release... they got a Patch for nearly every Rom to use SRAM Saving... :-)
Its also where i got M&L-SSS (U) and (E) Savefix... as I was too lazy to do one myself...
And Im happy that so many Peaple can enjoy the Game now due to my M&L-SSS Fix :-)
Another Note on the Side... with S-RAM Fixed Roms you can use the .sav Files that got outputted while using the Fixed Rom in VBA on GPSP, but not vice versa... even thought the Rom is fixed...
Why? Well... GPSP trims unneeded Data from Savegames... so, once you save in GPSP, the Filesize of the .sav file will be cut down to 32kb instead of the original 64kb, and therefore is unuseable in VBA... ^^
Its a shame... but afterall... we found enough bugs for ******** to make his emulator more advanced... this little bugs might be solved in 0.7 release... who knows... ;-)
Also, a little Information why the Bowser Battle and the Minigame Room crash on M&L-SSS...
Bowser Battle : Previously before my Fix got released, all Battles had a Endless Idle Loop in Battle... making the Game seem "stuck"... After I had removed it... it seemed fine... but there is another Problem with the Bowser Battle... that now BSODs your PSP...
It seems the only Reason the Battle didnt crash before was that it never executed this BSOD Error due to the Endless Loop in Front of it...
My Guess... theres a Problem with the many Tutorial NPCs in Battle... like Luigi, Toad, Peach, ect...
Minigame Room : Im quite sure this crashes because of the Jumping-Line the Brothers use... as it uses a mathematic calculation to know where to place the Pixel... (making it sort of act like a real 3d-string...)
I doubt this is currently emulated and therefore it simply BSODs on you...[B]PS2*NFO Hatelist[/B]

MLSS crashed again... At the track minigame that is essential to progress. But i put the save on VBA at it worked did the minigame and put back the save at gpsp and everything is working fine again. Now I will progress in the game and report any other crash point.

Interesting... So I guess every sort of minigame not using game-mechanics crashes, ne?
I didnt play 2 much yet, only just saved Prince Mamek and did the small Minigame at the Stone-Guardian before ^^
Please report every possible crash... And right now I so feel pissed cause only one idle loop kill is allowed per game -.-

Why don't one of you more enterprising kids take a look at patching a GBA ROM using one of the freely-available flashcart ROM patching softwares that are floating around the net?
In other words, download the EFA Linker II flashcart GBA ROM patcher software and run the GBA ROM through that. It will probably fix most of your GBA ROM savegame issues, possibly other things as well.
I know I patched a ROM for my EFA Linker II and the same ROM worked just fine - complete with savegame fix - on my Supercard mini-SD even though they are two different pieces of hardware made by two different companies.
The ROM even still worked in VBA on my Mac.

About what u said Fou-Ryu about vba not able to load gpsp saves, my vba 1.8.0 loaded the 32 kb MLSS save without any problem and gpsp did the same with the 64 kb save of the same game. Maybe this issue exists only with vba 1.7.2??

Omg MLSS crashed again dammit :Argh: :rtfm: Now when u try to enter the castle from the door which is south of the track end it crashes.. It is possible to continue the game it is not necessary to enter the door at the time being. But when we have to enter it? Damn that game worked allright on pspvba why it crashes everywhere on gpsp?

Poketheaven doesn't have a save patch for Tales of the World 3: Narikiri Dungeon, they barely have some for any game...
