    Standard Good shooter-game (SHMUP)

I've never seen myself as a shooter-gamer. But I've just recently bought Ikaruga for Gamecube and I fell instantly in love with it. So, I'm wondering if there is any good shooters (SHMUPs) that I can play on my PSP. System doesn't really matter, but I've heard that there are many shooters for NeoGeo CD, maybe one of those are fun.

    Keep the suggestions coming!

The PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16 in the US) has the best shooters. Get PCEP or HuE and then start with Super Star Soldier, Soldier Blade, Final Soldier, and GunHed.

Edit: I got ahold of a UMD dump of Star Soldier for the PSP, it's not really all that great (the PC Engine series was much better) but it is a pretty good shooter and an excellent example of how a shooter can be done on a PSP. Seeing as it's the only old school shooter on the PSP for now, it is worth looking into it when it comes to the US.

well, you can't go wrong with r-type. try r-ytpe 1 & 2 for the pc engine (which is really just the complete arcade game split in two). also, there's super r-type and r-type 3 on the snes.

i'm a big fan of konami's gradius series. play the original for the pc engine. you'll find gradius 2 for the pc engine cd (it's worth it), and gradius 3 for snes. if you like those, you HAVE to play parodius, which is an odd combination of gradius and another konami shooter, twinbee (detana twinbee for pc engine, pop'n twinbee for snes). there's gokujyou parodius and jikkyou oshaberi parodius (parodius 2 & 3, jap-only) on the snes.

godmedia is right. hudson's star soldier games are another good series. if you like parodius at all, you should check out star parodia for the pc engine cd. it's hudson's version of parodius, one of the playable ships is the pc engine itself (it collects hucards for power-ups, and shoots cd's!)!!

check out http://www.shmups.com for more info on these types of games...

VShmups or HShmups? Personally, I prefer VShmups of which the SNES had a ton of options..and, of course, Twinkle Star Sprites. Excellent Shmuzzle game..

Twinkle Star Sprites is okay (just okay). single player is boring and redundant. two player, however, is great fun. but, of course, you can't play two player on the psp...

Well my friend, being a SHMUP Connaisseur myself, let me hook you up with some of the best Shmups that illegal ROM downloading can pirate.

    SNES:
Axelay- Brilliant and Beautiful Vertical and Horizontal shooter with awesome weapon systems and high attention to detal
R-Type III: The Third Lightening - The third installment of R-Type which only appeared on the SNES, best in the series
Space Megaforce - Vertical Shmup with 8 different powerups which can all be individually upgraded. Great boss battles as well.
Super Earth Defense Force - Vertical Shmup, decent gameplay good weapons and powerup system
U.N. Squadron - Horizontal Shmup by Capcom, buy to upgrade system, decent
Super Turrican 2 - Very great looking walking shmup, a bit like contra, with a ton of Mode 7 effects and other great special effects, overlooked by many.

    Turbografx:
R-Type - Even though Super R-Type contains this game on the SNES, this version is a strait port of the Arcade version and is definetely the better of the 2.
Hyperdyne Sidearms - Macross style SHMUP
Super Star Soldier - Manic shooter and fast paced, very good SHMUP

To tell you the truth I can't think of very many great shmups even though all the hype surrounds the TG...

    Genesis:
Alien Soldier - Made by the same guys who made Gunstar Heros, very fast paced manic SHMUP, main character looks like a chicken-man though
Contra Hardcorps - This game has been the murderer of not 1, not 2, not 3... But 4 of my Genesis controllers back in the day. And every bit as hard as it was then today.
Eliminate Down - Awesome SHMUP, there were few on the genesis that were as good as this
MUSHA - Fast paced SHMUP with powerups and Options, very fun to play
Steel Empire - Wierd SHMUP placed in the 1800's, still fun to play
Zero Wing - The famous shmup known for it's dialogue, and also a pretty fun game with good gameplay and bosses
Thunder Force 2, 3 and 4 - Can't really remember this because I dont feel like breaking my PSP out, but these are great games.

    Neo Geo CD:
Metal Slug 1 and 2 - Incredible game, awesome animation, great music, insane boss battles, definetely one of my favorite games of all time next to R-Type LEO and Armed Police Batrider. Once again, I cannot stress enough how incredible the animation in this game is.
Last Resort - Awesome Shmup with very beautiful gameplay and powerups, you can't miss out on this game.
Pulstar - Made by Ex-Irem members, the guys who made R-Type. One of the greatest SHMUPS out there.
Viewpoint - Hard as hell Isometric shooter, one of the very few good isometric games, This game is actually in full 3D and doesn't just say it is because it's Isometric.

If MAME ever evolves past what it is on the PSP, I can give you a ton of games that are incredible.

Wow, that took me a while to type up, you'd better download every single one of those games.

    WHAAA???

TG-16 is just the US Version of the PC-Engine, and it had the greatest of the shmups!

    GunHed (US Blazing Lazers)
    Super Star Soldier
    Final Soldier
    Soldier Blade
    Star Parodier
    Gradius I, II, & III
    Salamander
    Parodius
    Space Harrier
    Side Arms
    R-Type
    Raiden Trad
    Macross 2036
    Dead Moon
    After Burner

Not to mention, the PC-Engine/TG-16 totally owns Nintendo's NES and SEGA's SMS which were it's contemporaries. In some cases, I believe it really gives even the SNES and Genesis a bit of a run for their money.

And, I'm also surprised to see that your SNES list did not include Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie. That was a fantastic horizontal shooter and a game that really pushed the SNES (my Super Famicom used to actually suffer from slowdown when the Zentraedi ship would first materialize in the first level).

    Here is a site

    SHUMP.COM

some of it's still in french despite the translation, but on the left you'll see three navigation drop down menu's... use those to get around... that's a great site, it lists many SHUMPS for many sysytems...

thanks to crowba for the link....
