After reading many reviews about Zelda, it seems many reviewers thought that the lack of voice acting was really damaging to the game. I had no idea voice acting was that important to some people.
So I come to you guys, do you really think voice acting is important?
I personally think Zelda games should not have voice acting at all. It's always been a tradition that Link never speaks in games, except for his grunts and the occasional 'meow' in WW. I feel that giving Link a voice would be throwing away this tradition. Sure some people should say that this game should move out of the old generation and in with the new, but personally I think silence is powerful.
You can argue that Link doesn't have to speak, but other characters can. I think this isn't a great idea. It would be like listening to a 1 sided conversation i.e. annoying.
Also having voice acting has the potential to ruin the series and characters, if the voices are done poorly. Could you imagine playing through TP where Link would speak just as he did in the cartoons? That would ruin the character for me completely. Look at FFX for example compared to the previous final fantasies. I enjoyed the characters a lot more if I didn't hear the annoying whines of Tidus constantly.
Another point is that speaking in english could ruin the emersion of the game. Everyone is meant to be Hylian and they have their own language. Hearing english would kinda ruin that emersion. Reading letters on a screen however
allows you to understand what is happening without breaking the immersion.
