MS are losing money on the 360 and it's currently winning in the sales race. They are expecting to make their first profit with the 360 when Halo 3 comes out. If MS aren't making profit then I doubt Nintendo have/had much to burn at all.
Besides Rare was sold long before the Gamecube was dead and long before the DS was selling well. So they couldn't have used the DS money and it would've been financial suicide to abandon the Gamecube that early on.
