Default *Guide* Update Your Dashboard Without Xbox Live

This is a guide explaining how to update your Xbox 360 without Xbox Live.

For this method you will need to download a file from Xbox.com and burn a DVD or CD. You should use this method if you don't have your Xbox connected to broadband, or if you have a dialup connection.

Download and Create a Disc

First start off by downloading the latest dashboard update from here.

Save the update as SystemUpdate_11-2006.zip - note it's about 6MB.
You will need to unzip the file to get the $SystemUpdate folder out and put it on your computer. Be sure the update folder is named $SystemUpdate.
The update will not run automatically unless the file name and folder structure remain intact.

Create a DVD or CD
To create an update disc you need the following:
  • A DVD or CD burner.
  • A blank writeable DVD or CD.
  • The update file from Xbox.com.
These steps will cover burning the DVD or CD with Windows and the DVD or CD burning software that is part of Windows.
For illustration purposes, we are using a CD in a CD burner, but the same steps apply when using a DVD in a DVD burner.

Step 1: Place a blank disc in your burner. Select "Open Writable CD Folder Using Windows Explorer" or just open the CD drive icon from Explorer.

Step 2:
Drag the $SystemUpdate folder to the CD Folder. If the CD write window doesn't open by default then drag and drop the $SystemUpdate folder on the CD/DVD RW drive.

Step 3: Click "Write files to CD" from the CD writing tasks from the sidebar.

Step 4: Go through the CD wizard.

Step 5: The CD wizard will create the CD. Wait until the CD is ejected.

Step 6: Remove the CD from the drive. Its now ready.

Update the Console

Follow the next steps to update your console.

Step 1:
Place the CD in the Xbox 360.

Step 2:
Turn on the Xbox 360.

Step 3:
The update will start automatically. Select "Yes, update now" and press the A button.

Step 4: Wait for the update to complete.

Step 5: The console will now reboot and you're done.

That was easy now wasn't it?
