There's nothing you can do to prevent it. Some people have opened up their Xboxs I believe and changed the heatsink or the clamps for it, although RRoD's are not as common now as they were before (with the new chips and all). There are some things that claim they will help fix it/prevent it externally but they are all a waste of your money - fans won't fix anything

The best thing for you to do is keep it well ventilated and take good care of it. I have had my new 360 since around Christmas time and it hasn't RRoD yet and it gets played everyday for hours (not all by me of course, friends come by an play it).

The problem is the x-clamps holding the heatsinks on (or so the internet speculation goes). If you want to fix this then you will void your warranty. The best bet is to not touch it and if/when you get a RROD send it to MS to fix. Trying to fix it yourself is a bad idea, unless you've already broken the warranty.

Also never buy any of the external cooling solutions, the fans are not the problem.

If you want a 100% guaranteed way to avoid the RROD you should sell your 360 and buy a PS3, Wii or decent gaming PC. I'm assuming you don't want to do that though so just stick with your 360 as it is.

hahaha i own all 3 of them already but i enjoy my 360 i guess ill just leave it be and send it back to ms if it happens to this 360. Does anyone happen to know if ms fixes the problem or do they just send you a new 1 which is bound for it to happen again. Also, my cousin just got the RROD on his 360 what should he do and does it cost money for him to send to ms what should he do?

I think they tend to see what hardware revision you have inside your 360 and then either fix it if it's a recent one or send a new one to you.

As for your cousin he needs to get in contact with MS either on the phone or through the xbox.com website. Personally I'd go with the website as you don't end up waiting on hold. It's only the actual console he needs to send in, not the hardrive and cables (so there's no worry about losing save data).

As long as he hasn't opened his console then there's no need to ask that question.

All 360's have a 3 year warranty against the RROD. So the earliest we'll see any 360's with expired warranties (expired not voided) is November this year.

It all hinges on whether he has broken the Microsoft seal (the shiny sticker) under the faceplate. If that's still in tact then he's still got the warranty.

I believe this is the link he will need to get his xbox repaired:
https://service.xbox.com/servicehome.aspx

If his xbox isn't registered it's no problem. He just needs to register it and then select it for repair.

Edit: I've just realised that my console isn't registered

No they tend to create cyclones inside the console which leads to poor cooling do to the interupted airflow. Hence why MS recommend not using them.

I hope your voice breaks

On the toosmartguys forums, I read about how the clamps literally pull apart the solder joins, and loosening the clamps will releive pressure ?

Depending on your RRoD though right ?

lawl removed because of fanboy loyalties..
i have three 360's, and all of them i've had to rip open and modify, just so they work long enough to boot a game

Seriously, rrod isn't a 'chance' thing, it's meerly a matter of time.
if you want a console that won't kill itself within 2 years, get a ps3.

can I send my 360 to microsoft if it makes loud whirring noises? It sounds like it's gonna kick the bucket. There is tons of space for air flow, above and below the 360, because I have it on standoffs.

i like both sony, nintendo and microsoft but in diferent ways. ps3 is a big MEH for me. xbox 360 is cheaper and has alot of good games and a good online service. all of my friends who has an xbox 360 has had it since launch and it has never broken or anything. maybe they take better care of it then others.

on the other hand i love my psp to death but i dont really see the potential of the DS... even if it has some awsome games i would never buy it really. and i love the wii.

You do miss alot of good games but, yes, the only way to 100% prevent getting an RRoD is to not buy a 360.

Alright, I really am hating this - the only way to not get a RRoD is not to buy a 360...that's plain stupid and doesn't help the situation at all. The case is he probably owns a 360..and the 360 has some excellent games for it, so why not buy it?

Please refrain from "don't buy a 360 posts" from now on

Well to be fair that really is the only way to guarantee not getting the rrod. Sure the reliability has improved with later models. But the fact that it's still an issue two years after the consoles launch isnt something that can be ignored. I still think (even with newer models) that it's a case of when you get a rrod not if.

There's nothing to say don't get a 360 because MS have the 3 year warranty against the RRoD. So when you get it there's nothing to worry about as it's all taken care of.

Seriously? It's the only correct answer. I didn't say don't buy it, I said the only way to not get a RROD is to not buy it. I was only joking, humour much? And to luosdam, you sir are a fool. I treat my 360 perfectly fine, I have never had any other console break, EVER. Yet the 360 breaks 5 times on me, and that's my fault? Honestly, buy a 360 if you want, they have good games. But it will at some point, most likely break. And when it does it will be replaced for free. but that still doesnt excuse poor design.
