I've just bought this £200 Samsung HD ready TV and the image on the Xbox just doesn't seem as clear as my brothers cheapo DMTech TV and we both have them on 720p. It is hard to explain but it just doesn't look right. My TV can support 1440 x 900 resolution. Some text looks jagged and not clear and sometimes Gamer pictures don't look the same as on my 14" portable. Would a HDMI cable be able to fix this or will it be better when the dashboard update comes out and it supports 1440 x 900?
I have a Samsung SyncMaster 932MW (Samsung SM932MW) |

But will it make the text look less jagged/blurred? Or will the image be better when the new Dashboard update allows the Xbox to correctly display 1440 x 900?
-=Double Post Merge =- I may just get the VGA cable but leave the white/red audio connectors out and plug my PC speakers into my TV headphone jack. Would that work? Last edited by -Dan-; 10-29-2008 at 06:11 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

Component cables are most likely over scanning. I know for my samsung tv, when I hooked up my 360 via component cables way back when, I got over scanning. Plus, you dont have control over exact resolution with those cables, so you are getting a slightly stretched image in addition. 720p is indeed in 16:9, while 1440x900 is 16:10.
Best bet is to get hdmi or vga cables.

But will HDMI let me choose different HD settings or resolutions so that it is set to my TV's native resolution (Possibly a new HD setting like 900p?) or would I be better off plugging my PC in via DVI and just getting a VGA cable for the 360?

Regardless of whether it fixes your problem HDMI or DVI (not VGA) would look better than component cables. Incase you are using a hdmi to dvi cable for your 360 and need to use both ports at the same time you will need to break off the big ugly grey case surrounding on your composite cables. Then both should fit in no problem, but please just dont buy the microsoft VGA cable.
Also, i'm not sure whether these cables will fix your problem but as it stands it is a non issue if it's going to be fixed for the new update. Last edited by eldiablov; 10-30-2008 at 05:44 AM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

So I should just get a HDMI cable then and see what happens? My TV has a HDMI port on it anyway.
EDIT: I'm guessing that if 16:10 is supported via HDMI, there will be a new HD setting? |

It's mainly like the text goes a bit jagged/blurry. My best bet would be a HDMI cable yes? Maybe it might get fixed in the update (Proper full support for 16:10)

The HD setting that is closest to 1440x900 is 720p, I myself have a VGA hookup and have absolutely no complaints of quality on my 19" - HDMI vs Compontent is hardly a noticeable difference, I never really saw the difference myself unless I really looked for it.
With NXE Microsoft will finally add support for 1440x900 resolution so you should be happy when that dashboard comes out (I know I will be) |

But will that 1440x900 support be just for VGA or is it for HDMI as well? I ask because obviously with VGA they just add the resolution, but what will they do for HDMI?

No, HDMI will only give u the resolution options like 720p, 1080i and 1080p. the VGA cables will let u select which resolution u want to output (1024X768, 1440X900 etc).
I have a HDTV monitor and its also 16:10, just switched from a third party VGA cable to HDMI and in my opinion VGA looked better but thats only because I have to fine tune the image settings on HDMI. |

Your choice really. My HDTV monitor is only 20 inches and there's no way u can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p because its so small, doesnt matter which cable ur using either. Technically HDMI will output a better image and is extremely cheap ($5 on amazon) while the official microsoft VGA cables will cost u around $30.
