Default Changing DVD drive Is it possible?

Well my friend has a borken xbox 360 the drive works but theres some sort of problem with the motherboard, but thats not what im posting about my point is can he slavage his existing DVD drive and install it another xbox 360? my other question is would the motherboards have to be the same or would you have to replace it with the same drive that was originally in the xbox 360?

Thanks in advance =D

eBay is probably your best bet as I doubt any online stores would have a cash of console motherboards on hand.

I would assume you could transplant the DVD drive as long as the DVD drive came from a similar or previous revision. If the drive is from a newer model 360, it might not work. Otherwise it should be OK.

Yes, you need to spoof the drivekey to match the motherboard you're putting it in. I don't exactly remember, I haven't done it in a long while, but it's not as simple as just putting in another xbox 360.

Synyster is right, I'll go into a bit more depth.

Depending on your DVD drive, you can either replace it with the same model drive, or you need to spoof the key entirely.

Xboxs are 'paired' with their drives to stop people switching the drives around. Older xbox drives were only paired with the model (EG If you had a Ben-q drive you could replace it with another ben-q drive, but not a samsung drive), however newer model drives all have a unique key (so a new samsung cannot be switched with even a new samsung - you need to change the key on the drive). It's a fairly complicated process, involve you hooking up the xbox drive to your PC via SATA, and you need a compatible SATA board, and some of the newer drives even need to be 'poked' with an extraction tool.

If you look around the interwebs there's hundreds of guides, it's just a matter of finding out which drive you have.
