So this has been happening for awhile, but its become worse recently:
When there is no disc in my 360, the disc tray will refuse to open, it goes out a bit, then gets stuck, then I have to keep trying and it usually takes about 5 of those partial openings for it to finally open. However when a game is in it, it pretty much opens right away. Should I send my 360 in? my 1 year warranty runs out in like 5 days, so Im thinking that I should, unless there is some easy fix or something.

I was flashing a friends Xbox today and the tray stopped opening up to. A good hard flick to the tray seems to do the trick.

How about always have a game in? When you want to switch games, eject the current then immediately put the new one in. There is never not a game in my 360.

It dosnt happen often, I usually am just like not paying attention, like Ill take a game out, think about playing another, and be like nah.. and then Ill turn it off, and then next time it goes back on, it takes like a minute to get it to open.
It was the worst after vacations, I had to pres it SOOOO many times it was ridiculous. |

I had the same problem... I just re-put the faceplate and it fixed it. I don't know if this will work for you though but you can give it a try.

i had that problem. i opened it and got a new drive. but it checks for id of some sort so you have to keep the old drive and just switch the disc tray parts and some gears maybe. but keep the old boards and chips or it wont be recognized.
