We may or may not see an XBMC like app on the 360. XBMC/XBMP were only possible because of the leaked SDK, so we'll have to see.

The thing that scares me is how not every 360 has a HDD now. So developers can't really take advantage of it :(

After some reflection, I'm really annoyed that they never included a HDD with the core system. This is going to stop practically all developers from taking advantage of it and makes live useless without one. Seriousley if a 2 or 4 gig hard drive was included in the core package I would be over the moon and it would mean that devs wouldn't be coy about using the HDD to lower load times etc. I would go out tomorrow and pay for a preorder if one was included with the core package no matter how small it was, even if the price was £10 or £15 more. As it is, the 360 loses one of its main advantages over PS3, and I have to pay for a load of crap I don't need or even want. Really if I was to get a core system, I'd have to buy a memory card which makes stops its price from being so attractive.

Wont this mean no backwards compatiability for the HD-less people?

Yup :) With the release of the core option Microsoft has effectivly made the hard drive in the 360 as useful as the hard drive in the Xbox or PS2. No game developer is really going to create much content that utilizes the hard drive since not all users will be able play that content. Games that require the hard drive will be few and far between because of this option. Unlike the xbox today at least everyone has a chance at some downloadable content but now that some xbox's will have a drive and some will not it really hurts what a developer can do, and will do. The only thing the hard drive will be used for is saves and downloadable content (how much content now that not all users will have a hard drive is really the question here). The system should ship with the exact same specs to at least give the HD a chance to make a difference. I guess we have to wait until the next generation for that PS4 Xbox 360 Next anyone? :Argh: :Argh:

It only has the wireless controller and you have to pay £15 to recharge it. Otherwise, you will have to stick with standard AA batteries.

Hmm. After thinking about this I have decided it may well be a better thing that Microsoft did this. It means that more people will buy the console AND developers will still use the Harddrive. They will just make the game recognise if there is a harddrive there or not, if not there will be longer load times. Which to be honest is all the HD is used for when its used in games.
Most people I would say will get the Harddrive in the end anyway.

intreasting... 399.99 hmmm sony could easily beat this (no offence fanboys) by haveing a SUPER cundle for 500 and 600 being the 500 one have a ps3, 2 controllers, a game, a hard drive, and all the compent cables a such.. and the 600 one could be the kind thtat u buy then u dont buy anything for a couple months ps3,hard drive, 3 games, 2 controllers, compent cables, and a next gen Eye toy bundled.. i know they will lost money.. but at that deal alot of xbox360 guys will convert...

i was going to get one, but i would never pay $400 fo a microsoft system, and the $300 one doesnt impress me

lol ok ur living in a dream world and we all know your a sony fanboy. The ps3 will be at cheapest 450. It will have one controller and no hard disk. The controllers will be very expensive. The 400 dollar one comes with so much, hard disk, heatset, wirless controller and the remote. For 100 dollars extra thats a lot. It also comes with a 30 day gold live subscription. Sony will not be so generous. And by the time the ps3 is out the 360 will be so much cheaper.

As for games not using the hard disk. Not true actually. The games can detect wether the hard disk is present. Meaning if its ther it will use it to increase the experience if its not it runs without it. MS arnt stupid ;)

i agree that $450 is probably the lowest it's going to go, they could make it cheaper if they nix that blu ray garbage

Sony will do the same to us like they always do I direct conversion. £500 with 1 controller and no hard disk.

edit: us ppl in the uk needed to buy the xbox for 300 + all the headset and live software and stuff. So 280 with all the stuff included is great.

lol well its not. Think about it even if sony price the ps3 low it will be around 400 over here without a hard drive. When the xbox 360 is 280 with harddrive and extras. And in performance ther virtually the same.

You only partially right :) Sure they can put the option you said into the equation however games that require hard drives will be limited and fail in the end.

Also using live for everything they advertise will only really be available to people with hard drives. The only thing the core systems could do is play games online and chat.

Downloadable content will not exist for them. No new Halo 3 maps for them to play with (etc. etc.) which in turn may limit the amount of work developers put into downloadable content knowing 1/3 - 1/2 of the users don't have a hard drive. No custom soundtracks for them to create, content from other people on live has no where to go. The slower loading is just the icing on the cake.

These are just small examples of why it's best to ship all hardware the same. The could offer the cheap and expensive version but the core system should have the same specs.

EDIT post above is pointless... they should include a hard drive on both systems.. because people that just buy the system will buy it.. then never buy a hard drive because they will think it is pointless and just buy a memory card so they might as well and just add 40 dollars to the core package and incude that

the x360 has PDZ and DOA4 i'll stick with that till sony impresses me

And all games will use the hard drive cache feature to increase load times. And the main point of xbox live is content,demos and trailers for hardcore gamers. Most live users that game will have the hard disk so ther obviosly going to release lots of content.

300 is expensive to me because im going to buy alot of games and just buying a 300 dollar system a memory card/hard drive and 5 games is lets see... 630 dollars... with no online/live stuff

Since most games will still have DLC the hard drive is a must and developers arent going to be diswayed by no harddrive kit, unlike ps2 most ppl buying a 360 have halo 2 and xbl so they need a hard drive to play MM.As for 5 gig hard useless no one realy wants that samll of hard drive trust me, it may sound ok but it wont be when you want to put a ton of game saves on and most ppl will be pissed since they might think 5gigz is good, but when they try have DLC for 2 good games not enough room. Plus Ms isn't going to start making 5gigz no one makes that size anymore.

Games are designed to use the HD but not to be dependent on it. And your thing about 300 + harddrive etc. Thats good. Cuz for 400 u can get the full kit which is worth more than the extra 100 ur paying for it. And how are you going to feel with ps3 with the hard disk and the eye toy (pointless piece of **** that it is) is 600 dollars and you need to buy games for it. obviosly thats not a confirmed figure but how cheap is the ps3 hard drive gonna be? i doubt its gonna be cheap.

erm well it is a 20GB laptop drive. Those drives aint cheap. But basically its so you buy the 400 version. Since you get the hard drive plus much more.

me 2 im debating wether to buy the recharge kit, or a 25 pound wired pad, cuz i can just use the wired 1 for single player (my room is pretty small no way i need wireless). Then use the wireless 1 for friends. Seems more practical. Then wen i move to uni when i need the wireless buy the pack for the wireless controller.
