Thats not what they said, they were saying that DVD9 is "more than we need to create a fabulous experience" but its a limiting factor of the 360. Just like every other platform has limitations.

They can use the HDD if they want and make it compulsory if they need it.

yup like crackdown it requires hdd for online play they can put that on games so core owners or people who dont have a hdd might not experience the full potential of their game.

that = fewer sales so companies arent likely to do that. i actually saw an article that some company is going to require HDD on 360 for its game. brave move brave move indeed.

Looks like it does cause limitations.

BTW: Point of thread?

Yes the DVD will have limits but atm PGR4 is not suffering because of them.

MS may very well turn around and decide to use the HD-DVD drive for extra storage (especially if they're going to live up to their 5 year plan). They may well have said that they wont use HD-DVD for games but they also said that they wont have HDMI, look what happened there.

Point is, it will eventually causes limitations. Whether these limitations will manifest themselves in the coming years I don't know. However, as said by Rockstar, it apparently already does.

PGR4 is a 360 exclusive thus made to run on only that machine. With GTA4 however, you have to accomodate for two systems, one having more storage then the other. If they want to live up to one console's best then they'll have to dumb down it for the other one, simply due to space issues.

No one here is arguing that it doesn't create limitations...

The only point that was made that DVD9 is big enough to make great games with which has been shown beyond doubt.

Mass Effect looks to be one of the best video games of this generation and it fits on a single DVD9 disk.

Nuff said.

DVD9 isn't cutting it anymore. But of course "not forcing formats on the consumer" is more desirable then forcing a crapped out game on the them.

To answer the thread title, it isn't more than enough. It's just.... enough. Blu ray is more than enough.

A great experience can still be had and great games will still come out. I just hope that it doesn't affect the multiplatform games on PS3 any more than it already has.

First I just wanna say thanks to Phil for his comments. I think what is going to happen in the future is that we are going to see more games that require the harddrive to play. Final Fantasy XI was one of the first 360 games and it requires the HDD. I posted this because everyone was making a big deal about PGR4 not having nighttime and using it to bash the 360.

Nobody was bashing PGR4, I like the PGR series and I don't think this one will be a step back or anything, it's going to look great no matter what.

FF XI requires a harddrive becasue its a MMO. Most if not all MMO's require a Harddrive.

Does PSU use the Hard Drive?

I dunno why they dont make more games require the Hard Drive. I'm sure almost anyone can get a 20GB HDD cheap now the Elite and 120GB drive is out.

Especially if they can force games to 60Hz. Thinking about it:

Game requires Hard Drive: You have to buy a Hard Drive
Game requires 60Hz: You may have to get a new TV.

Call of Duty 4 also 'Requires Memory Storage'. Not sure if it only needs a memory card or a hardrive.

Call of Duty 4 Boxart

@Phil
No offense, but you must be retarded if you think Microsoft will start using the HD-DVD drive for games.

They never should have released the Core pack. They should make the HDD dirt cheap, then the devs could utilaze it without being worried about their customer.

See what I'm getting at? It's very feasible that if 3rd party games start switching away from 360 because of DVD9 limitations then MS will have no choice but to use the HD-DVD drive for games. Personally I hope they do, it might make buying one a bit more viable.

Why pay more for HDMI 1.3 when the only difference is Dolby TrueHD support, the 360 doesn't support TrueHD.

Much higher bandwidth, allows for deep colour (when used) and a higher resolution is possible. Sony made this thing almost 100% future proof. Still needs games though.
