Transferring Content Licenses to a New Console

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but I stumbled across it last night when I went to Major Nelson's blog.

In a nutshell, after jumping through a couple of hoops, you can transfer the content license of downloaded games onto a new console if you got a new one from RROD or something else, etc.

You start the process by going here: Xbox DRM Site

But before you go there, watch this video walkthrough explaining all of the needed steps. Video Walkthrough

Some things worth noting:

• You can only due this once every 12 months
• Cannot tranfer movie rights, so watch them first
• You need to re-download everything once complete

Yeah, I saw this on engadget, pretty neat considering that RROD's happen pretty often now-a-days.

If the console is replaced by warranty repair, your license should have already been transferred so you only need to download each file again. It's been this way for a while now.

Anyways, did this on my new xbox the other night. Process itself is pretty straightforward, just going thru and redownloading all the files you still want is kind of a hassle, although it just redownloads the updated license file or something and not the whole file itself.

That's good to know because I have about 40 arcade games from my 1st console that I want to send over to my Elite.

If you have deleted the item in question the obviously you need to download the whole thing again. Otherwise it will take a second or so while it verifies the file is there and updates the license on it.

I'll be going through and doing this sometime this week. Altho these numbers are a bit worrying:



I'm sure that must include demo's and trailers because I can't believe I've bought that many XBLA games/DLC.

Yeah, that includes demos, gamerpics, themes, game trailers, anything like that.

That's alright then. I only need to worry about DLC and Live Arcade games. Gamer pics and themes already work offline (obviously).

If they were free anyway.

Anything paid needs to be updated including themes and gamer pics.

Either way I'm not gonna bother updating the licenses for them. I spend so little time on my 360 that what the Dashboard looks like is irrelevant (especially when the store is the only part I use and that isn't themed).
