New Price Cut

Another price cut across the board. $50 for each.

Proof for at least the arcade.

This apparently shows the SKU for the no-hard drive Arcade model. Other cuts are said to be coming for the Pro (60GB, $299) and Elite (120GB, $399), a development first reported by Ars Technica.

VGChartz follows the pic with a detailed analysis of what the new price points could mean for Microsoft, and the timing behind the price change. An excerpt:

The scheduling of the drop is telling as well. It takes place 1 week after Square Enix's 'Infinite Undiscovery' and 2 weeks before Harmonix/EA's 'Rock Band 2' - both exclusive to the Xbox 360 platform at the time of release and pricedrop (obviously, Rock Band 2 will ship in November for the other platforms).

The writer also peers into a crystal ball of sorts to guess at the production costs of the 360. Conclusion, down from $525 at launch to $140.15 to $182.19 today.
Now that the arcade is cheaper than the Wii I wonder how it will do.

Old Price Cut

Xbox 360 Console Now Offers Triple the Storage

Published July 13, 2008

Redmond, Washington - Microsoft is giving consumers more gigabytes for their buck. The company today announced an Xbox 360® console with triple the storage space of the original console, but for the same price of $349 (U.S.) estimated retail price.

Available in retail stores in the U.S. and Canada starting in early August, the upgraded Xbox 360 will include a 60GB hard drive for storing the growing wealth of digital entertainment available for the console, including music, movies, television shows, and game content. In addition, Microsoft today dropped the price of its 20GB Xbox 360 console in the U.S. and Canada to just $299 (U.S.) (ERP) while supplies last, a savings of $50.

"We know consumers need more and more space to store the amazing digital content Xbox 360 offers, and we're giving it to them at no extra charge," said Albert Penello, Xbox director of product management at Microsoft. "No one device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver, and now you'll have three times the storage to manage all that great content."

Xbox 360 is just one of three Xbox 360 gaming and entertainment systems Microsoft offers. Microsoft's Xbox 360 Arcade, which comes with a 256MB memory unit and five Xbox LIVE Arcade games, is a value for the whole family for $279 (U.S.) (ERP), and the premium Xbox 360 Elite console is available with a 120GB hard drive for $449 (U.S.) (ERP).

Out of the box, the Xbox 360 console is ready to provide an incredible gaming and entertainment experience:

* Xbox 360 console: The console is equipped with a cool white finish and three powerful core processors capable of producing the best in high definition (HD) entertainment (up to 1080p for gaming), 16:9 cinematic aspect ratio, anti-aliasing for smooth textures, full surround sound, and high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) output.
* 60GB Hard Drive: The 60GB detachable hard drive allows you to save your games and store television shows, movies, music, pictures, trailers, levels, demos, and other content available from Xbox LIVE Marketplace, the premier one-stop digital download center for entertainment.
* Upscaling DVD Player: With an HDMI cable (sold separately), watch your favorite DVDs in near high-definition using the upscaling capabilities of Xbox 360.
* Xbox 360 Wireless Controller: This award-winning, high-performance wireless controller features the Xbox Guide Button for quick, in-game access to friends and music. It has a range of up to 30 feet and a battery life of up to 30 hours on two AA batteries.
* Xbox 360 Headset: The headset lets friends and family around the world chat while playing games, watching movies, or sending voice messages on Xbox LIVE.
* Xbox LIVE Silver Membership: For no additional cost, Xbox 360 owners can chat with friends online, collect Achievements to improve their Gamerscores, send and receive voice and text messages, and access Xbox LIVE Marketplace content such as game demos, and purchase or rent HD movies and TV shows, as well as the best in downloadable games from Xbox LIVE Arcade. (Broadband Internet access required.)
* One-month subscription to Xbox LIVE Gold: An Xbox LIVE Gold Membership provides a complete online entertainment experience. Those who subscribe to this premium service can engage in competitive online multiplayer matches, tailor their matchmaking via feedback and accomplishments, and chat with an entire group of friends at a time.
Good time to buy a 20GB.

Its unknown whether these 360s have the Jasper spec, it seems like the right time for Jasper to be released though.

All 360s do for the RRoD. Other defects are one year only.

Soo many press and retailers leaked the info, so there was no point. Save 5 mins in the conference and spend it on GeoW2!

I was gonna ask that on here. Guess that gives me my answer. Already got a gamercard, although now I've gotta find an extra $44. Hopefully all 60 gig units are Jasper ones. That'd be nice and easy.

Go to kmart.com and search for "B4J-00001" - that's the model number of the Premium.

You get a page where it's selling for $299, just like in the ad. Walmart is still selling it for $399.

Wait. That's not the 60 gig model. That's the 20 gig fire sale price. And Wal-Mart just has the 60 gig one. That one is $350.

Too bad that's without a harddrive. It's a good price to replace your RRoD 360 though (which is what my older brother will do)

Price drop hits Europe:

Quote:
UK, September 16, 2008 - Following the successful line of price cuts in the US, Microsoft has finally confirmed that it is to follow suit in European territories, bringing down the price of all Xbox 360 units.

Effective from this Friday, the basic Arcade unit will now retail at £129.99, while at the other end of the range, the 120GB Elite model will now weigh in at £229.99. The standard 60GB model will now retail at £169.99.

All of which brings Microsoft's Xbox 360 down to claim the title of the cheapest current generation console, undercutting both Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PlayStation 3.

"We're proud to be expanding the reach of Xbox as the first next-generation console to break the £150 barrier, making the platform up to £170 less expensive than competitors," said Microsoft's Chris Lewis, continuing, "With well over five million consoles sold to date the combination of the strongest games line up this Christmas, really innovative entertainment experiences and these groundbreaking new price points will ensure we continue to enjoy fantastic momentum in Europe."

So they've made the price of the harddrive-less 360 to £130?

That just means more people are going to buy that, especially kids.

Guess that means more 360's without hard drives and more games that need the hard drive, not using it.
