Just caught this little bit of info from GC over at IGN:

UK, August 20, 2008 - A subtly redesigned Xbox 360 controller has been spotted on the showroom floor at this year's Games Convention in Leipzig, sporting a new-feel d-pad that addresses the previously unresponsive and spongy model.

While aesthetically identical to the previous controller, the d-pad has been re-engineered to offer more instant control, with an eight way input taking place of the previous four. A brief hands-on with the controller playing Pro Evolution 2009 proved that the redesign has been effective, with the d-pad sitting in a larger rocker and proving more tactile.

It's expected to release at the same time as this year's Pro Evolution Soccer, and the re-design is thought to have been inspired by the imminent release of Street Fighter IV.

We'll have photos of the new controller - though don't expect to see the difference - and further impressions later on.

You only use the d-pad to change weapons in Gears. How would this help in the slightest?

Its really the only game that I use the D-pad...I'm a gears of war fanatic so my old controllers dpad is pretty much trashed. So, yeah thats why I plan on buying this for gears...maybe pointless but thats why.

I've logged more miles than most people in Gears and I have never had one issue with the d-pad in that game. I'm not following you on this one.

this was my only problem with the 360 controller. i don't even need another controller but for a d-pad that doesn't suck I'll buy a 5th controller.

This new controller will only be available in Europe, Asia and South America...

Anyway, I nipped this problem in the bud, and just bought the hori arcade stick. The only place where the sh*tty D-pad is a problem is arcade games, and those games were made for an arcade stick.

I have three family members (one addicted to SF2...) who play my 360 4-6 hrs a day. Including friends who chill daily and just rape my controllers. I just decided I want a personal controller not worn by overuse (I used to play A LOT). *The old controllers are falling apart...I rarely use the 360 after I bought the PS3, but when I do to play gears the D pad stuggles to pick up the signals.

My D-pad pissed me off alot playing gears....trying to do a quick change to the shotty or grenades and not having it respond is very much a piss off....

I've seen it at work already myself, they're in new colours as well, got some green ones in yesterday, they look really nice but no different from the old ones. D pad does feel a lot different in its cradle, seems to move more easily and signals are sent instantly.

You know you guys in America could just import one? Controllers are not region locked anywhere in the world....
