I heard that the PS2 perpously dies out on you after 2 years or so of purchase(stupid laser lens)..Having you wasted 150 or so for a new one(also right around the time the new slim ps2 luanched..COINCIDENCE?)or send it to sony to "fix it" for around 100 bucks. Well anyways, it was safe to assume you got the..FAILED to show game or whatever error..and what a dreaded error it was.. Thankfully, i found a way to fix it..Thanks to this site.. http://arstechnica.com/articles/paed...s2.ars/1?51054 After i did all this..Everything worked like a charm..Beautifull..I continued playing my Gt4...W00t! Later that month..I decided to sell it with a few games, controls, and memory cards for 70 bucks..That moment i realized...The ps2 was useless...No games on it intrested me..and it was time to let go...And it really didnt matter to me that i sold it..i won it in a Gran Turismo contest! Was 12 years old at the time... The ps2 was a huge let down for me...The ps3 looks even crappier.

seems more likely its for NA only. but even then the #'s dont quite seem to add up. i doubt they have the resources to count the replacement ps2's. i cant see these being accurate to be hoenst UNLESS they somehow did get the replacement #'s and i doubt they did.

its also worth noting that a significant amount of ps2's were replacemetns. too many to easily keep track of no matter who you are. let alone some random firm. anyone remember back when capcom accused sony of making faulty ps2's on purpose?

I don't want to sound racist...but most japanese products(that i've owned) seem to break...and from what i read around...japan has more faulty products...this may be totally untrue and i'm just an unlucky *******...but i'd hate to say it...the ps2(for me at least) fell in that stereo type...
and i really hope you are wrong T-baggins(not saying you are or trying to be a smart ass) but i really hope no system requires me to fork money out. http://www.PS2Settlement.com take a read at that... if they do the same with ps3....sony will fall |

I've noticed that with the "Disc Read Error", it was just dust on the lens. I had a launch day unit that did that after about a year, cracked it open and noticed a fair amount of dust sitting on the lens. Ran a laser cleaner and it worked like new, but then later I noticed that it would only take a couple months for dust to accumulate again. Then something happened. I tripped over the controller cord and messed up the controller port. Got a new one, and it did the same thing with the error, but I messed that one up from taking it apart too much. One of those stupid ribbon cables got pinched and fried the motherboard, so I'm on my 3rd one. Had it for about 2 years or so, and no errors or any problems...

The numbers seem about right. Although I pictured Nintendo fairing slightly better. But the Revolution should pick them up a bit back onto their feet. As to faulty PS2's, I never actually owned one but I had friends who always were talking about how theirs would bug out from time to time. Not actually breaking but just things like not reading the discs and otehr minor annoyances.

Yea. Nintendo does make their systems out of quality stuff (although they kind of downgraded a bit off with GCN, it doesn't seem to be made out of as tough).

I saw something on XPlay a while back and they tested all three consoles durability. I remember the PS2 failed the first test, while the Xbox and GameCube passed. (I can't remember the tests though) Only the Gamecube survived the last test: A 10 or 15 foot drop onto a concrete floor. The disc cover was a little broken but it booted up just fine.
You also gotta remember Nintendo's core audience, the 9-10 year olds. You know how they can be, so Nintendo builds these things to last. Actually I remember I had this issue lying around and figure I'd scan this article for you. It shows you the durability of the GBA:

I wouldnt say their core audiences are 10 year olds at all. Nintendo systems DONT HAVE a core audience, thats what makes em so great. No matter who you are you can pick up the gamecube controller and have a good time. The same cant be said for the other systems...

I don't know why people think if something is "Kiddie" it must suck... Hell, one of my favorite games ever is Aladdin... A game made from a Disney movie... Fun as hell... It may be kiddie, but it's fun... The most important factor of a video game...

Alladdin is one of my favorite movies. I LOVE the disney movies, do i hide that? No. Some people are just insecure with themselves, dont feel 'manly' unless theyre playing an M rated game, even if it sucks. Pathetic. Gamecube had some of the most fun games ive seen in a long time, and alot of people missed out because of the E rating.
